By definition, alternative managers invest in non-traditional assets and/or employ unconventional strategies and tactics, as they seek to push the risk-reward envelope in order to generate alpha and absolute returns. Given the relative efficiency of the markets, the high return expectations of this 'asset class', and the risk burden that must be constantly maintained and managed, this type of investing taxes the creativity, diligence, and stamina of even the best practitioners and performers. Without a constant flow of promising new ideas and opportunities from the outside, an alternative fund will inevitably face the same type of declining production curve as that of a more obvious wasting asset, such as an oil well.
